Google Maps + Street Art = LOVE

Thanks to GBlog (Gessato blog, it’s a good time to recommend this one) I have come across a new interesting site called streetartlocator.com – it uses the Google Maps platform to display street art creations, based on their location around the world. You could select between stickers, stencils, installations, grafitti… or see them all. It’s a real beautiful thing that really made me go WOW, and for me saying this, especially on Saturday morning – it’s a big thing.

A friend told me that children’s love to books is influenced by the number of books their parents have at home. As a book-worm (as a kid AND now), I can only thank my parents for that. We had a really big library in the room, filled with books, texts, illustrations and what not. I want to make a public statement, to my kids (who are not born yet; Mom, no news for you, don’t worry…) – we’ll have lots and lots of books at home, in all languages, in all colors.

But till then, I envy the people who work and visit the most beautiful book store in the world - the Boekhandel Selexyz Dominicanen in Maastricht (Holland) is a bookstore built in a one-time Dominican church, celebrating a time when most of the knowledge preserved in books was not of a secular nature. Times have changed, religions have swelled and contracted, yet this church still stands thanks to Merkx and Girod Architects, who have taken this classic temple and kept it alive with a new set of knowledge.

Infographics, seven deadly sins and the United Stakes

Wired Magazine has a beautiful post about the 7 deadly sins as they are spread across the nation. The maps of sins were created by plotting per-capita stats on things like theft (envy) and STDs (lust). The result is beautifully intriguing.

Cheeseburgers aren't Kosher... but these are!

I don’t know if you’re aware of this culinary weirdness, but there’s a very successful product on the shelves of the supermarket back at my home, which is an eggplants mush tasting like a liver. Who could have come up with this perversion?! Eggplants which taste like liver? Seriously.

So when I bumped into the story about the cheeseburger cupcakes, I had to share it too. It’s actually sweet, but the question is and remains – why?

I’m not really sure how I feel about this - The stiletto spy school. On one hand, it sounds so kinky it’s on the edge of being cheap (the Seduction and Flirtation course, and the logo…) but on the other hand, i WISH i could master in combating, poker and mixing martinis. The “missions” (4-8.5 hours courses) are combinations of different “skills” and courses, and they actually look like fun… so what are you doing next Saturday?

Good morning. Nothing I love better than morning inspiration, the kind that makes you want to go and create SOMETHING. And today, a woman who combines two loves – food and design. Julie Rothhahn sculptures food! How pretty are the designs, the sculptures, the tables, the events… even the “simple” research of bread (the highlight of my bread career was – and still is – making little balls of bread. That’s it).

I usually do this for a living. But this time, I’m going to share them hoping someone will do something with it.

I have a problem with finding an objective source for skin products. I am in my 30′s, know my skin type, but I want to know which products are recommended for me – should I be guessing that all the RX’s are for women over a certain age? And the fact the Jeniffer Garner, who’s more or less my age, promoting a specific brand, is what I should be looking for? I don’t think it’s too much to ask…

One of the amazing things about living here, is that every day, every moment is worth a frame (I hate saying Kodak Moment, rather go for a Polaroid Shaker). It’s the people, the vibes, the colors, the streets, everything. And every time it’s the same thing – damn, forgot to take my camera! We went to the park today, to see what’s the story with the Michael Jackson street (park) party that was produced by Spike Lee at Prospect Park, Brooklyn. And it was amazing! I really felt like this is part of some history, some story – people dancing, wearing one glove, kids doing moon walking, showing love and making noiZe… I just wish I had the camera to take the photos and share them… Tomorrow. I promise.

An ode to the Mediterranian Area

Blogs are like fish. They multiple by the hundreds and then one day just die. It’s a handful, mind you, but I guess you have to love it, otherwise you wouldn’t do it. And you also have to speak to people’s minds and hearts – and sometimes stomaches, to have them follow you. It’s a whole theory and practice of attention – but let’s keep it simple.

Let me introduce the Dorm Cooking blog. Sadly,it only existed for few months. The last post was about diving into the exam season – and not a beep ever since. I hope she had good scores… But what I know she had is great receipes, and I want to post here her Hummus Pesto recipe as a homage to my sweet sweet Italian husband, who loves this Israeli/ Middle Eastern hummus so much (almost the same level as I love pasta )

My 5-min Pesto-Hummus (5-min if the hummus is store-bought)

hummus, 1/2 cup
baby spinach leaves, 2 clenched fistfuls
pan-toasted pine nuts, 1 small handful
extra-virgin olive oil, 1 tablespoon
freshly squeezed lemon juice

Place all ingredients in the food processor, in the order that they’re listed, and grind/purée until smooth, but don’t over-process it, because you want to be able to still see the beautiful flecks of spinach. The recipe will yield about 3/4 cup of pesto-hummus. Optional garnishes, as pictured above, include a drizzle of olive oil, sprinkling of paprika, chopped hard-boiled egg, extra toasted pine nuts, and crumbled feta. What a happy feast on one tiny plate!
